Happy Birthday, George Washington.

February 18, 2008

Today we’re officially celebrating the Federal Holiday known as George Washington’s Birthday, and the State Holiday known as “President’s Day,” but not all states are celebrating the same thing we are today.

In Massachusetts, they’re celebrating Washington’s Birthday plus John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, and John F. Kennedy. Alabama is celebrating Washington and Jefferson Day. Arkansas is celebrating George Washington’s Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day. New Mexico has a “President’s Day,” but it’s in November. (For more info see Wikipedia.)

Some states also celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday today, and the day is often called “Presdents Day,” or “President’s Day,” depending on whether one or more birthdays are being celebrated. Note, in Oklahoma, ours is “President’s Day” – i.e. ONE President – George Washington.

Shhh…don’t tell the retailers this though. As Everything Lincoln: The Honest Abe Truth about President’s Day points out, the “Presidents Day Sale,” created by the marketing industry, has become a national institution, and we we wouldn’t want to miss out on any good sales!
