Pension Pickle

January 1, 2008
A new report showing deficiencies in the state’s pension systems is hardly a surprise. The Pew Charitable Trust‘s analysis pegs Oklahoma’s systems as some of the poorest funded in the country. It’s not the first time we’ve heard that dire assessment, and there’s no sense in disagreeing with it. Oklahoma went for years without adequately funding pension plans, particularly the one for teachers. Lawmakers gave some relief to the teacher retirement system last year. But they’ll have to renew that commitment for several years to get the system on more solid financial footing. That will require resisting the temptation to repeat the past mistake of bypassing this necessary long-term investment in favor of spending on projects with more immediate and visible results.
