Did OKC School Board Violate The Open Meetings Act; School Board Meeting Broadcast Live at 3pm

January 11, 2008

OKLAHOMA CITY — A Monday meeting in which Oklahoma City’s school superintendent was suspended was illegal, officials said on Friday.Sources with the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s office confirmed to Eyewitness News 5 that they determined the school board violated the open-meetings act but without criminal intent.

Therefore, no criminal charges will be filed, they said. However, the results of the meeting will be nullified, and the board will be required to reveal notes from its executive session, in which it presumably discussed the status of Superintendent John Q. Porter.

The Oklahoma City school board is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Friday to readdress Porter’s suspension. Porter was suspended Monday on allegations of financial misconduct and poor job performance.
